How to Kayak to Kaneohe Sandbar

Kaneohe Sandbar is a raised area of sand in Kaneohe Bay off the coast of Oahu that is about 1 mile wide and 3 miles long. How exposed the sandbar is depends on the tides. Usually during low tide the water is ankle deep, while at high tide it is waist deep. It is rare that the sandbar is completely exposed, but the shallow water makes it even more beautiful since it is a clear turquoise color. Kaneohe Sandbar also has reefs nearby which makes it the perfect place to snorkel. Follow this guide to learn where to rent kayaks from, how to kayak to Kaneohe Sandbar, and what to do when you get there!
Where to Rent Kayaks

There are several places to rent kayaks from on the windward side of Oahu, mainly in Kailua and Kaneohe. Make sure to book a kayak online in advance especially if you plan to kayak to Kaneohe Sandbar on a weekend. I recommend renting your kayak from Windward Watersports in Kailua. The staff here is great and will help show you how to load and unload the kayaks onto your car. They will provide you with backrests, paddles, and life vests. You can also rent a dry bag from the shop if you don’t have one. Don’t forget to ask to rent an anchor that you can use to hold down the kayak when you get to the sandbar.

What to Bring on Your Kayak Trip

- Waterproof sunscreen: Bring it with you because you’ll want to re-apply!
- Sunglasses: Always helpful in Oahu.
- Anchor: You can rent an anchor from the kayak rental shop to hold down the kayak.
- Snorkel gear: Make sure to bring snorkel gear so you can see sea turtles and vibrant fish. I used this snorkel and goggles set to snorkel near Kaneohe sandbar and I highly recommend them.
- Reusable water bottle: This Stanley water bottle stays cold for up to 12 hours.
- Dry bag: It is very helpful to have your own dry bag with you for kayaking and other water activities. I always use this 10L dry bag for kayaking adventures.
- Snacks to eat while relaxing at the sandbar.
- Iphone / camera to capture the memories.
How to Kayak to Kaneohe Sandbar

You will launch from He’eia State Park and paddle about 1.25 miles to the sandbar which can take 30-40 minutes. On the way there or back you can stop at different reefs and snorkel. Although the water is usually calm since the bay is protected by coral reefs, it is still best to kayak to Kaneohe Sandbar on days when it is less windy.
Another way to get to Kaneohe Sandbar is with a boat tour from Kaneohe.
What to Do At Kaneohe Sandbar

When you reach the sandbar you will see the water get more shallow and clear and you will eventually be able to stand and enjoy the beautiful water with scenic views of Oahu. You can relax at the sandbar or explore and snorkel.
