Getaway Compass

Planning a trip can be significantly easier and faster if you know what resources to use for finding flights, hotels, rental cars, and more. Below are the travel resources that we use for our trips and recommend to our community. Note that for some of the links below when you purchase something we get a small commission, but you still pay the same!

Find Cheap Flights

  • Going
This travel membership gets you the best flight deals sent directly to your email for your origin airport(s) of choice. You can also set up alerts for specific destinations. With our Going membership we have booked flights from the west coast of the US to Italy and Greece in the $500s, Asia in the $400s, and Costa Rica in the $200s.
  • Google Flights
Google Flights is easy to use and offers several ways to search for cheap flights quickly. The map feature is a great option if you are looking for a deal and are open to different destinations. If you have flexibility around the date you can use the calendar feature to see the cheapest dates to travel to your destination. Google even has flight alerts that you can set up if you want to be notified if the price changes for a certain flight or route.
  • Skyscanner
With Skyscanner, you can search for flights across airlines to find the best prices.  There are several ways you can search for flights depending on what you are looking for. You can search for a specific destination and see the cost for different dates to help you decide when to travel. Another option is to search specific dates and keep the destination open to see a list of destinations with the cheapest flights on these dates.

Book Accommodation

With you can find a range of accommodations from hostels to luxury resorts. shows you the price for the total number of nights and gives you the option to filter by your priorities such as location, amenities, budget, review score, and more. It is best for finding places to stay in Europe, Central / South America, and Asia.
  • Expedia
You can find a range of hotels, vacation rentals, apartments, and guesthouses on Expedia making it a good option if you want to compare accommodations on one website instead of browsing multiple sites with specialties.
  • has endless hotel options in the United States and is my go-to when I am looking for last-minute hotel deals.
  • Airbnb
Airbnb is an online marketplace that features unique accommodations around the world. One of the things that I love about Airbnb is that it allows you to stay in areas where there might not be hotels and are more off-the-beaten-path. You can find places to stay across a large price range from a room in a house with a shared bathroom to an entire villa.

Book a Rental Car

  • Discover Cars
This travel resource is great for finding and booking rental cars. Discover Cars is a great way to search across rental car companies to find the best price. Always check the reviews for the rental car company before booking!
  • Hertz
In the United States we love using Hertz since it is very convenient with the Hertz Gold Rewards Program which is free to sign up for. When you are a gold rewards member and make a reservation in advance you don’t even have to see an agent when picking up your car at many locations in the US. You get to go directly to the Gold Rewards rows to pick your car. The rewards points add up and can help you get free rental days. Some companies have special rates with Hertz so make sure to check with your company since that can help save a lot of money.

Get Travel Insurance

  • SafetyWing
On every international trip we always get travel medical insurance with SafetyWing. SafetyWing offers affordable, flexible, and reliable travel medical insurance that can be purchased ahead of your travels or while you are already traveling. Luckily we have not needed to use the travel medical insurance because we haven’t needed medical care on our international trips but it makes us feel comfortable knowing we have it if we end up needing it.
  •  Travel Insurance Included with Travel Credit Card
We use the Capital One VentureX Card (Apply with our referral link)

Most travel credit cards have travel insurance included which helps you financially when something unexpected happens. You could get reimbursed for this like missing luggage or canceled flight. This does not cover medical expenses, so getting travel medical insurance will still be necessary. Make sure to read the terms and conditions of what your travel credit card covers.

Find Tours and Experiences

  • Viator
For booking tours and experiences we love using Viator which has endless activities around the world. The best part is that you can cancel up to 24 hours before the activity without incurring any fees. This is helpful as travel doesn’t always go as planned.
  • GetYourGuide
Another great travel resource for booking guided tours and activities, GetYourGuide even has specially curated tour options. With many reviews for each activity, you know exactly what to expect.
