BEST TIME TO GO
The weather varies greatly depending on where you are in the country. Make sure to look up the weather in the specific locations that you are going to. In the state of Arizona the weather can change from 60 degrees and sunny to 30s and snow in just 2 hours of driving.
Hotel: The best site to book hotels is hotels.com as they provide the most options and often have deals, especially last minute. They typically have coupon codes so make sure to check their site for coupons before booking. If you create an account you will be able to get better prices.
Airbnb: If you are looking for a bigger space than a hotel room, Airbnb is a great option. There are Airbnbs throughout the US and they are often cheaper than hotels. It will also allow you to stay somewhere with a more local feel. Keep in mind that the best Airbnbs book up to a few months out, so book early.
Airplane: This is the best method for long distances in the US. There are many airlines and the best way to find the cheapest flight is through google flights (except Southwest flights only show on their website). Try to book your flights at least one month in advance for the best price. Note that the budget airlines including Spirit and Frontier do not include a carry on suitcase or checked bag, so make sure to add the price of the bag when you are deciding on a flight. All US airlines, with the exception of Southwest, charge for a checked bag which costs at least $30 each way for the first bag, and more for the second bag. If you are flying within the US it is always best to travel with a carry on bag and make sure to check the size restrictions on the airline website.
Rental Car: Renting a car is a great option if you are planning to travel outside the cities and especially for visiting national parks. The youngest age to rent a car varies by the rental company and the state. For most companies the youngest age is 21, but up to age 25 you must pay a surcharge. There are many rental car companies to choose from, so use a search engine to find the best price.
Inner city metro: Many US cities have a metro system that you can use to get around. In some cities it is really easy to use and goes everywhere you would want to go in the city, while in others it is still a work in progress. Recommended cities to use the metro system are: Boston, Chicago, New York, Portland, and Seattle.
Rideshare (Uber and Lyft): Uber and Lyft are available in almost every major city in the US. If you have data it is a convenient option to get from the airport to your hotel and around the city.
Bus: If you want to travel to different cities by bus, Greyhound is the biggest company. Certain routes are a great option such as Boston to New York, but some routes such as Phoenix to Los Angeles take a lot more time than driving on your own. Tickets are typically cheap, with Boston to New York costing from $15 one way. The busses have a restroom in the back and should include wifi.
Train: If you want to travel to different cities by train you can book with Amtrak. Amtrak usually doesn’t take much less time than taking a bus or driving and the tickets can cost almost as much as flying. They do provide discounts if you book more than 21 days in advance.
